Tips - websites

(latest first)

Keep the navigation simple

Users are easily confused, so make the navigation as easy as you can. "About us" might not be your first choice for a phrase to label the section describing your organisation, but it is understood by everyone, which is a big advantage.

Organise your site to answer users' questions

Your website exists for the benefit of its users, so the information in it should be organised from their perspective, not yours. Think what questions someone using your site would ask and make sure the site provides the answers.

Write bullets with care

Bullet points are a powerful device for conveying information, but they need to be carefully thought out. The items in the list should be of a similar length and expressed in the same way, otherwise the user will not be able to take them in at a glance.

Make images meaningful

What are your images saying? Photographs and other images that are merely decorative take up valuable space and may confuse the user. If your image is specific, use it for one purpose only. If it is generic, always use it for the same purpose.

Put your best bits first

Users are busy people and may be paying for the time they spend online. Whatever you have to offer or say, put the most important things at the top of the page. That way users can decide quickly whether they are interested or not.

Write with the future in mind

You need to think what your words will mean in the future as well as what they mean now. A "verdict" on a football team before a game will be misleading once the match has been played: it will have become a "prediction".
