PhilosophyPsychotherapy is concerned with the 'whole person' - this means someone's background, culture, religion, sexuality and gender, and the meaning and value people bring to their lives I believe that the concept and language of 'mental health', as it is currently used, is the language of a medical discourse, which has serious consequences for us all in every aspect of our lives, and also for society. 'Talking about' and treating mental health problems as something that exists in people's heads, and for which they are responsible, causes further isolation and misery. There are times when depression, anxiety and sadness are quite ordinary and common expressions of what it means to be human, and as such they are responses that are both truthful and sane. Human suffering and pain are inextricable from the world in which we all live. Whilst psychotherapy is not a sticking-plaster for all the difficulties and questions that human life inevitably brings, it may be the first opportunity for someone to sit with another person and speak of what is troubling him or her. |
