Holiday house on the Helford River

Bishops Quay is on the bank of one of the Helford River's beautiful unspoilt creeks. It is a small privately owned quay and harbour, from where two fishing boats work. The long, large house is divided into two homes, one of which is offered for holidays. It is secluded and offers an ideal base for walkers, anglers, bird watchers, sailing enthusiasts, nature lovers and those who enjoy an adventure.

The Helford has a wonderful variety of river beaches and woodland paths, all well worth exploring. Frenchman's Creek, the inspiration for Daphne du Maurier's novel, is two miles down river. Tremayne quay and woods, now owned by the National Trust, are about a mile away by path or water.

Bishops Quay is to be found at the end of a quarter-mile lane. There are only four houses in this hamlet, so it is truly quiet, private to the owners and the guests only.

Bishops Quay enjoys the best of the afternoon and evening sun. You can take evening drinks and supper on the balcony in the long summer evenings, when the sun stays on Bishops Quay until it sets behind the field opposite.

The main part of the house is a converted stone barn, which is over two hundred years old. It stands next to a lime kiln which has been made into a house. Bishops Quay has been owned by the Kirby family for over fifty years and it makes a very special setting for an easy, happy and memorable holiday. A holiday here has much to offer children who will appreciate the 'Swallows and Amazons' atmosphere and the freedom to potter around in the various boats.

This unique house has many reminders of local and family history to intrigue you, and a marvellous panorama of fields, woods and water. The bird life that can be observed from Bishops Quay is fascinating. Varieties living contentedly include shelduck, curlew, oyster catcher, little egret and heron. The calling of the curlews from the mud flats and the gentle lapping of the water at high tide are the background sounds here. The coming and going of the tide makes an ever changing scene to watch and enjoy.

We offer three boats to our guests: a motor bass boat, a sturdy wooden rowing boat and a sailing dinghy. We also have some canoes here for visitors to use.

Because this is a quay-front house, it is not suitable for young, non-swimming children.
